Impulse is a community newsletter produced by the Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology (NCSPP) and distributed electronically at no cost to subscribers. We envision Impulse as an integrative source for local news, events, and thinking of interest to the psychoanalytically inclined. Our goal is to be your guide as you explore the Bay Area's rich array of analytic resources.

We invite you to become a member of NCSPP, if you are not already. And, we welcome you as a subscriber to Impulse. Join us as we highlight the exceptional diversity of psychoanalytic thought and practice in Northern California.

sunt lacrimae rerum et mentem mortalia tangunt

Here in this grove
a strange sight met his eyes and calmed his fears
for the first time. Here, for the first time,
Aeneas dared to hope he had found some haven,
for all his hard straits, to trust in better days.
For awaiting the queen, beneath the great temple now,
exploring its features one by one, amazed at it all,
the city’s splendor, the work of rival workers’ hands
and the vast scale of their labors-all at once he sees,
spread out from first to last, the battles fought at Troy,
the fame of the Trojan War now known throughout the world,

SAN FRANCISCO PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY TRAINING PROGRAM (PPTP) INFORMATIONAL EVENING

The San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis (SFCP) is excited to open the application process for those wishing to begin our two-year Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program (PPTP) in fall 2017.

Through seminars, case conferences, and long-term individual supervision, the PPTP offers an in-depth introduction to psychoanalytic psychotherapy theory and technique, and provides grounding in fundamental psychoanalytic principles.

by Molly Merson, MFT

Freud for Our Times. Psychoanalysis offers another level and layer to our fast food culture, in which the pull to "cure" quickly can obfuscate real change. How do we think about cases, and how can we apply that thinking to agencies, structures, and institutions using a psychoanalytic mind? This radio segment also addresses approaching racism and othering from a psychoanalytic perspective.

The Paradox of Life-Affirming Death Traps. This is not a psychoanalytic article and does not reference psychoanalysis, but I urge you to read this piece with a psychoanalytic lens. What paradoxical, life-affirming death traps do we create for ourselves just by being alive, and could our desire for vitality lead us down dangerous paths?

"Westworld"--Or: In Praise of Psychotherapy. The television series 'Westworld' explores the development of consciousness through an understanding of trauma, and the darker impulses and desires available to conscious beings.
