October lands on little black cat feet. We welcome Halloween, a Pagan holiday and European cultural tradition where it's believed the spirits can make contact with the physical world. On the tail of Halloween comes Day of the Dead, an Aztec ritual and Mexican holiday where we greet the departed with flowers, cakes, and chocolate skulls (sweet dreams?).

Death itself has provided us with several rather lively psychoanalytic concepts. Freud's death drive implies a wish to return to our organic, preanimate state, and our deflection of this urge — towards aggression. The dead mother of Andre Green signifies the unavailable or depressed maternal figure and the child's subsequent mourning and loss. And Michael Eigen's concept of psychic deadness refers to the patient's emotional unaliveness.

Perhaps Hans Loewald was most astute when he remarked that the purpose of psychoanalysis is to turn ghosts into ancestors... It could be said that our patients go door to door, hoping for something sweet. So for you, dear clinician, in this spookiest of months, may all your treatments be not at all tricky.

We welcome you to be part of the lively psychoanalytic community in Northern California and join NCSPP.

Many young adults are on the brink, facing crucial life decisions and unknowns.Where am I going? What do others expect of me? What do I want?
