Impulse is a community newsletter produced by the Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology (NCSPP) and distributed electronically to subscribers at no cost. We envision Impulse as an integrative source for local news, events, and thinking of interest to the psychoanalytically inclined. Our goal is to be your guide as you explore the Bay Area's rich array of analytic resources.

We invite you to become a member of NCSPP, if you are not already. And, we welcome you as a subscriber to Impulse. Join us as we highlight the exceptional diversity of psychoanalytic thought and practice in Northern California.

Since this is the beginning of the year, it feels like a good time to revisit some Impulse business.

Impulse is still looking for our next Editor-in-Chief. During my tenure here, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. I have connected with colleagues and made new friends while using my voice to express my love of psychoanalytic ideas. I imagine the title of the Editor-in-Chief might sound intimidating or a huge time commitment to some. But I can assure you, my actual experience is neither of those things.

The program will meet virtually on Wednesday evenings, with some opportunities for in-person gatherings at SFCP for case discussion and social connection.

POLITICAL AND PERSONAL PARALLELS

It is no mistake that I recently read Daniel Shaw’s Traumatic Narcissism (2013). The book has lingered in my thoughts. I have not been the same since the (re)election of authoritarianism, ruling by strict power over others. I imagine the same could be said for some of my patients - especially those who have endured narcissistic abuse from parents or partners. The echoes between the personal and the political feel unavoidable, even haunting.
