IMPULSE: A PSYCHOANALYTIC COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER BY NCSPP
Impulse is a community newsletter produced by the Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology (NCSPP) and distributed electronically at no cost to subscribers. We envision Impulse as an integrative source for local news, events, and thinking of interest to the psychoanalytically inclined. Our goal is to be your guide as you explore the Bay Area's rich array of analytic resources.
We invite you to become a member of NCSPP, if you are not already. And, we welcome you as a subscriber to Impulse. Join us as we highlight the exceptional diversity of psychoanalytic thought and practice in Northern California.
PILGRIMAGE TO SRI LANKA: AN EXPLORATION OF CULTURE, BUDDHISM AND SELF
Join us on this unforgettable two-week travel course in Sri Lanka. The course offers psychoanalytically-oriented therapists a unique opportunity to learn "in situ" about the irreducible relationship between culture and psyche. As participant-observers in a vibrant yet unfamiliar cultural setting, participants will explore a wide variety of historical, spiritual, medical, artistic, ritual, and everyday aspects of Sinhala Buddhism.
THE MYTH OF THE INTACT HEALER
When I was diagnosed with cancer last year, I asked the surgeon if I would be able to work while undergoing chemo. "Physically, you'll be fine," she said. "But I wouldn't want to pay money to a therapist who was dealing with cancer."
The Rise and Fall of Wilhelm Reich. Vice blogger Jason Louv revisits the turbulent life of Wilhelm Reich, whose controversial body-centered theories and experiments provoked FDA agents to burn his books and dismantle his laboratory with axes.
Emory Looks at Hollywood: A Psychoanalysis of Superman. In an entertaining five-minute segment, Emory professor Jared Defife, Ph.D. muses on the major psychological underpinnings of Clark Kent's character. His separate commentaries on Jay Gatsby and Bruce Wayne (of the Batman narrative) are equally thought-provoking.
Betty Joseph, Famed British Psychoanalyst, Dies at 96. This Telegraph obituary succinctly reviews the life and work of Betty Joseph, whose writings facilitated the discipline's shift in emphasis from content-based interpretation to process-based inquiry.
