Drs. Lane and Garfield discuss levels of emotional awareness - from the unconscious autonomic and sensorimotor levels (dominant in somatization) to the highest level of multi-dimensional conscious experience. They show how helping patients experience and mentally represent unconscious emotion leads to an increase in the structural complexity of their emotional responses, and to a decrease in somatic symptoms. Our discussions will focus on the clinical implications of their work.
