As a child of the ‘80s in Georgia, I remember the items my mother often purchased for class party snacks. Long before Asian goods were in vogue, she chose items that were, let’s say, not the most popular. Funyuns instead of Doritos. Mint grasshopper cookies instead of Chips Ahoy! She was an immigrant from Hong Kong and bought flavors reminiscent of a place no longer accessible. A taste of culture. A taste of home.

Last spring, when tariff proposals were announced, I thought of the impact they might have on those from communities that, like my family, made the decision to live in the United States but continue to yearn for reminders of their homeland. A taste of culture. A taste of home.  

In our current, post-quarantine times, I’ve also heard how many of us, regardless of background, long for something similar. A taste of culture. A taste of home. Here, at NCSPP, we invite you to join us to engage in a culture of psychoanalytic thinking and to make NCSPP your professional home. In the coming months, we are holding several workshops where you can join others in the community to participate in lively conversation about psychoanalysis, or you can attend our Annual Holiday Party to join in a festive celebration of the community. We also have openings both on our committees and the Board and invite your interest in more direct participation with NCSPP. You can also consider nominating a person or organization for the Community Service Award to recognize outstanding community service in the field of psychoanalytic psychology.

Regardless of the avenue you take, I hope you will consider finding a space of culture and home with us at NCSPP.
