IMPULSE: A PSYCHOANALYTIC COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER BY NCSPP

Impulse is a community newsletter produced by the Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology (NCSPP) and distributed electronically at no cost to subscribers. We envision Impulse as an integrative source for local news, events, and thinking of interest to the psychoanalytically inclined. Our goal is to be your guide as you explore the Bay Area's rich array of analytic resources.

We invite you to become a member of NCSPP, if you are not already. And, we welcome you as a subscriber to Impulse. Join us as we highlight the exceptional diversity of psychoanalytic thought and practice in Northern California.

GUN VIOLENCE AND MENTAL ILLNESS

In the aftermath of the Newtown massacre, mental illness has been highlighted as a key factor in gun violence. Although attention to our broken mental health system is long overdue, the discussion for the most part -- such as a proposal for a national registry of the mentally ill -- further stigmatizes and scapegoats individuals who suffer from mental illness.

"A Meeting of Two Fallible Human Beings": Rediscovering Love's Executioner. In this pithy reflection piece, Guardian writer (and former psychiatric patient) Clare Allen encounters Irvin Yalom's classic collection of short stories with fresh eyes.

The Psychodynamics of ADHD. Pediatrician Claudia Gold, M.D. affirms the importance of developing a family narrative around the emergence of a child's attentional and behavioral challenges, which may in turn enable a more nuanced approach to treatment.

From Therapon to Therapist: Examining the Linguistic Origins of a Professional Title. Charles Ashbach, Ph.D. elaborates the link between the Greek word Therapon and contemporary understandings of therapeutic function, process, and change.

26TH NCSPP ANNUAL EVENT WITH MICHAEL SHOSHANI

For the 26th Annual Event, NCSPP is honored to welcome Dr. Michael Shoshani (Rosenbaum). Dr. Shoshani will explore the relationship between perverse psychic formations and the ability to develop a personal identity and mind of one's own. In this event, Dr. Shoshani will draw on his book Dare to be Human (2009), as well as on theorists Bach, Bion, and others, to demonstrate how therapeutic practice can transform the language of perversion into the language of love.
