Impulse is a community newsletter produced by the Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology (NCSPP) and distributed electronically at no cost to subscribers. We envision Impulse as an integrative source for local news, events, and thinking of interest to the psychoanalytically inclined. Our goal is to be your guide as you explore the Bay Area's rich array of analytic resources.

We invite you to become a member of NCSPP, if you are not already. And, we welcome you as a subscriber to Impulse. Join us as we highlight the exceptional diversity of psychoanalytic thought and practice in Northern California.

by Tanisha Stewart, Psy.D.

This year, we as a nation seemed determined to return to a sense of normalcy. Mask restrictions were relaxed and in-person gatherings resumed. I recently attended the annual lecture of the Psychoanalytic Couple Psychotherapy Group. It was my first large, in-person gathering since the pandemic began. I was immediately struck by the simple presence of my colleagues. I often speak of the local psychoanalytic community, but as I chatted with people and we caught up on our professional and personal lives, that sense of community was a lived, embodied experience.

I began my presidential term at NCSPP intending to create more inclusionary spaces while also welcoming dissent and provocative thought. As NCSPP continued to reenvision our organization’s future, those lofty goals were met with the obstacles of attending to routine needs. This year NCSPP tentatively resumed programming after a year of hiatus. I was honored to work with a dedicated Board of Directors and a trusted Administrator as we contended with the tension of returning to normal operations without thoughtlessly reverting to prevailing norms. Our incoming President, Willow Banks, Psy.D., has served on NCSPP’s Board of Directors for several years and represents both a continuation of that vision and the opportunity for new ideas.

PERFORMING FEELINGS

I wonder where feelings come from: do they express an authentic interiority or do they reflect social convention? Do they drive belief or follow belief?

After each new global, national, or local outrage, patients rage and weep. A sampling of common statements that could be traced to many incidents:

“I can’t believe this is happening. I can’t actually process.”
“I hate this country.”
“I don’t feel safe. What’s next?”
“This is the end of liberal democracy. It’s utterly depressing.”

Then, the issue is essentially dropped.

The outpouring of emotions seems genuine and I feel moved by the anguish and outrage. I believe that my patients register broader sociopolitical events as deeply, personally upsetting.
