Impulse is a community newsletter produced by the Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology (NCSPP) and distributed electronically to subscribers at no cost. We envision Impulse as an integrative source for local news, events, and thinking of interest to the psychoanalytically inclined. Our goal is to be your guide as you explore the Bay Area's rich array of analytic resources.
We invite you to become a member of NCSPP, if you are not already. And, we welcome you as a subscriber to Impulse. Join us as we highlight the exceptional diversity of psychoanalytic thought and practice in Northern California.

It’s that time of year again when we are seeking nominations for our open 2025 Board Officer positions. This year, we are requesting nominations for three elected Officer positions, as well as inviting inquiries into appointed committee chair positions. All positions will begin in the next calendar year, January, 2025.

I have this secret passion, no, an obsession to see psychoanalysis everywhere. I hear it in music, in everyday conversations between non-therapist coworkers, during Judge Judy reruns, in line at the grocery store as I watch a cashier interact with a customer, while I listen to my favorite fiction author’s interview, and as I read poetry.
You might as well know this, if it has not become obvious by now, one of my goals as the Editor-In-Chief of Impulse has been to introduce psychoanalytic ideas in a relatable and approachable way. I want to take away the elusiveness and exclusiveness of analytic ideas. Perhaps not everybody needs this. But I have often felt intimidated in psychoanalytic circles because at times those environments felt overwhelming for someone who deeply feels first and thinks second. I mistakenly thought that I needed to know all the theories in order to have a coherent and intelligent conversation. I was certain that my version of analytic practice was not legitimate. That was my story. That is now an old story.

THE PROVIDENCE OF AUGUST
“The only thing August is good for is nature and friendship.” (Sigmund Freud, 1894)
There is a different cadence to psychotherapy in the summer. August is slow-moving. Patients are away. The consulting room feels lonely, and the sessions disjointed. Colleagues and supervisors are gone. My own mind wanders to my life outside of work. Taking longer mornings in bed, longer walks with my dog, and indulging in binges of Love Island. I want to be poolside, napping, slowly arranging my spice rack. I am not distracted but I am not focused. I forget about sessions as soon as they end. I make plans during the open hours my patients leave vacant. I am still working but the days stack together differently.
My name is Theresa Tan, and I am an early career psychologist, working both in-person in Oakland and virtually. In my short time in private practice, I am discovering new ways of being with child and adult patients that I couldn’t quite do in training. I’m also confirming my passions that were previously ignited. For example, I continue to delight in play therapy and sand tray and sandplay therapy, especially with children ages 4-6. What’s new to me is how much I especially enjoy working with highly sensitive adults. As I further expand and clear the “plumbing” in my own internal world, I find my patients are similarly more able to drop into their own worlds; I then feel out how I can support and explore their worlds with them.
