Impulse is a community newsletter produced by the Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology (NCSPP) and distributed electronically to subscribers at no cost. We envision Impulse as an integrative source for local news, events, and thinking of interest to the psychoanalytically inclined. Our goal is to be your guide as you explore the Bay Area's rich array of analytic resources.
We invite you to become a member of NCSPP, if you are not already. And, we welcome you as a subscriber to Impulse. Join us as we highlight the exceptional diversity of psychoanalytic thought and practice in Northern California.

Recently I attended a class at The Psychotherapy Institute discussing the work of Dr. Thomas Ogden. Ontological Psychoanalysis or What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up? (2019), describes differences between epistemological psychoanalysis (knowing and understanding) and ontological psychoanalysis (being and becoming fully alive). Ogden stresses that the work is neither either/or and that the analyst engages in a kind of shifting back and forth between the two in a nuanced combination. The job of the analyst is to welcome his own being alive in the room to help facilitate the growth of his patient. What this welcoming could look like is, of course, a complicated story…

LOOKING FOR A THIRD
If you spend any time swiping on Feeld, a dating app geared towards non-monogamous and kinky folks, you’ll notice a trend: mostly heterosexual couples “looking for a third” to engage in a threesome with. Sometimes they’ll phrase it differently (“Looking for a sexy female to join us!"), but more often than not the identity of the “other” is collapsed into one simple phrase: “looking for a third.”
NCSPP’S HOLIDAY PARTY
All NCSPP members are invited to celebrate another year of provocative programs, classes, and events at our Annual Holiday Party. As analytic therapists of all generations gather together for support, this event reminds us of our collective commitment to growth, vitality, and deep thought.
Come, mingle with new and old NCSPP friends, and toast with us in style!
CIIS PSY.D. ANNUAL FALL CONFERENCE. We are proud to announce CIIS Psy.D.'s annual fall hybrid conference, "Notes from the Field: Pushing Depth‐oriented Psychology forward. Registration is now open to all interested people through Brown Paper Tickets.
In‐person: https://notesfall2024.brownpapertickets.com. Virtual: https://notesfall2024online.brownpapertickets.com.
Psychodynamic therapy continues to be a vital and influential clinical orientation, despite pressures that seek to medicalize the complexity of the human experience. This year, at our annual Psy.D. conference, Notes from the Field, we seek to build off our inaugural conference last year and explore ways that depth‐oriented psychology is pushing into new and novel spaces. This conference brings together California Institute of Integral Studies’ faculty and alumni as well as clinicians in the field who are expanding our understanding of depth‐oriented psychology and pushing the discipline into new fields and terrains. We will explore transpersonal perspectives within the clinical encounter, holding both the practical and the expansive possibilities. We will dialogue about psychedelic‐assisted therapy and how it can interact with trauma and marginalization. We will discuss ways our alumni are pushing the field of depth‐oriented psychology forward, and we will also feature our keynote, Dr. Jennifer Mullan, alumnus, who speaks to the vital need to decolonize psychotherapy.
