Last month's natural and man-made disasters were a kind of clarion call that awakened in many of us a heartfelt responsiveness to those in need. We at IMPULSE took the opportunity to remember those in our own backyards: Berkeley High School, the San Francisco Housing and Urban Health Clinics, and the Children's Psychotherapy Project. This month I want to call attention to the needs within our own community: those individuals still in training, those recently licensed and struggling to establish a practice, or those who work in community mental health settings. Many of these practitioners are unable to afford the rich diversity of courses offered by the psychoanalytic community.

A couple of years ago NCSPP established a scholarship fund to subsidize the fees for this group of practitioners. The program has been very successful — and requests totaling about $3000 have been made in the past year alone by a wide variety of applicants. The program is funded exclusively through contributions from the membership. I will pledge $100 this month to the scholarship fund. I hope you will join me by making a contribution of $25, $50, or $100 to help us make NCSPP's offerings widely available. To make a donation, contact us via our online form. We sincerely appreciate your generosity.

Finally, we hope you'll support our efforts to strengthen collaboration in the Northern California psychoanalytic community by becoming a member of NCSPP today.

The James Whitney Clinic of the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco has been providing low-fee depth psychotherapy since the 1940s. The clinic welcomes people of all ethnic backgrounds and sexual orientations.

The following poem was composed on the occasion of "The Geography of Trauma," NCSPP's San Francisco Introductory Event for 2005.
