President's Remarks

Since Luba’s post last month, I’ve been holding some of her questions in mind. (I’ve also been singing, “Thank you for being a friend…” nonstop. Thanks, Luba and the Golden Girls!) I spend a lot of time thinking about “secure bases” in general but it was helpful to orient specifically towards my professional secure base and the idea of “daring ventures” from that base. Is a lack of daring ventures a reflection of how secure my base is? What would be considered “daring” professionally and/or within NCSPP?

In On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous (2019), Ocean Vuong writes, “What were you before you met me? I think I was drowning. And what are you now? Water.” What a succinct and beautiful metaphor for the transformation that can be co-created through an intimate relationship like therapy.

NCSPP CORNER

The Education Committee is accepting proposals for Spring 2025, Fall 2025, and Spring 2026. We strive to develop programming that represents the intellectual diversity of contemporary psychoanalytic psychology and the sociocultural diversity of therapists and patients. We are also eager to develop programming that pertains to clinicians in different stages of their careers and/or psychoanalytic understanding.

About NCSPP

The Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology (NCSPP) is committed to the study of psychoanalytic psychology and the encouragement of its interest in the professional and general communities. We are a multi-disciplinary, non-profit membership organization open to mental health professionals and all others interested in the study of psychoanalytic psychology.

Our more than 450 members form a community that spans the greater Bay Area and Northern California. NCSPP is a local affiliate of Division 39 (psychoanalysis) of the American Psychological Association. Our vast array of lectures, intensive study groups, scientific meetings, courses, our journal fort da, and numerous special events and projects are all brought to you by scores of volunteers who work to support NCSPP’s mission. Our educational programs include continuing education credit for psychologists, marriage and family therapists, and licensed clinical social workers. We welcome you into the psychoanalytic community in Northern California. Join us.
