The new year has ushered in some staffing changes here at Impulse. Bruce Weitzman, our longtime Managing Editor, commenced analytic training this past fall. Given the all-consuming nature of training, Bruce stepped down from his post.

I'd just taken my meds (dark chocolate covered espresso beans, if you must know) and like many addicts, was wondering where to replenish my stash.

PSYCHOANALYTIC OBJECT RELATIONS CONSULTATION GROUP: Meets Monday from 1:45 - 3 pm in Palo Alto. Are you curious about how to work analytically? Whether you meet with patients once a week or multiple times a week, face to face or on the couch, you can think analytically by understanding the concepts of transference/countertransference, the unconscious and the frame. Clinical material from the group is highlighted by relevant papers. Co-lead by: Diane Strongwater, MFT (408) 737-1337 or Carol Harrus, M.D. (650) 328-8935.

NARRATIONS AND TRANSLATIONS: A Psychoanalytic Consultation Group. The characters, real or imagined, that populate a patient's life come alive in our consulting rooms. The stories they tell -- of past and present, fear, fantasy, and desire -- play out in transference, counter-transference, displacements, dreams, and enactments. This ongoing group will focus on listening at multiple levels to how patients tell us their stories; understanding how, when, and why we say what we say to patients; and interpreting the impact of these interventions. We'll discuss cases that members bring to the group, occasionally adding relevant readings from various theoretical perspectives. This group is specifically designed to develop and expand ways of thinking and working psychoanalytically, and to support and encourage each participant's unique voice. Palo Alto, Tuesdays, 11:00-12:15, beginning April 5, 2011. Cia Foreman, Ph.D., Member and Faculty SFCP. (650) 322-3204.

ACCESS INSTITUTE PRESENTS A CONTINUING EDUCATION SERIES: Psychoanalysis in Evolution: Concepts and Applications for the 21st Century. I. Frame - (Reframe) Reconfiguring the Psychoanalytic Surround for an Expanded Scope of Practice - Bart Magee, Ph.D., Tamara McClintock Greenberg, Psy.D., Dai To, Ph.D. Providing psychoanalytic treatment outside the traditional private practice setting requires a fresh look at theoretical conceptualizations and applications of the psychoanalytic frame. The panel participants discuss creative and controversial approaches to frame considerations that challenge traditional notions of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The panelists will discuss how these approaches facilitate the analytic treatment of marginalized populations in diverse contexts. Examples will be drawn from treatments provided in a hospital, a prison and an adult day treatment center. Saturday February 26th, 2011. 10 am to 1 pm. Access Institute, 110 Gough Street, San Francisco. General Admission $30, Access Institute Faculty, Staff, Interns and Alumni $15, Students Free ($10 additional fee for CE processing). 3 CE Credits. Detailed information to follow on future offerings in this series. Please call: 415-861-5449 to register.
