Impulse is a community newsletter produced by the Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology (NCSPP) and distributed electronically at no cost to subscribers. We envision Impulse as an integrative source for local news, events, and thinking of interest to the psychoanalytically inclined. Our goal is to be your guide as you explore the Bay Area's rich array of analytic resources.
We invite you to become a member of NCSPP, if you are not already. And, we welcome you as a subscriber to Impulse. Join us as we highlight the exceptional diversity of psychoanalytic thought and practice in Northern California.

"The line separating 'public politics' from 'private distress' is culturally constructed, and not always very clear, even as we seek to police it. That line has rarely seemed less clear than it does today," wrote British sociologist William Davies in a recent article entitled "The Age of Pain." In the 1960s, second-wave feminists highlighted the illusory nature of such a line, leading to the creation of the now ubiquitous slogan "The Personal Is Political." But in contrasting the political upheaval of the 1960s to that of today, Davies makes an interesting distinction: "Back then, people were coming to define themselves by their pleasures: their sexual desires, consumer preferences, lifestyle choices. Today, many are coming to define themselves by their pains: past traumas, mental illnesses and chronic health conditions."

Well, it happened. Trust that many of us are experiencing symptoms related to trauma. This is true especially in my practice because the overwhelming majority of my patients are minorities. It has been a harrowing week in my work with my patients, who I love, as well as for myself and my family. We seem to be moving through rapid cycles of grief. I hope that as psychoanalytic practitioners and students, we make use of our teaching principles, and afford ourselves the opportunity to process and contain these intense fears as we face many uncertainties. I will speak for the board and our upcoming leadership by saying we will continue to champion diversity in all social forms. We will fight and not tolerate hate toward social minority groups. In the meantime, I will hold my cisgendered, educated, white self accountable by rolling up my sleeves and weaving activism into every step of my day. Additionally, I will make considerable efforts to repair my hurt with Jobama memes and whatever else it takes.

TALL POPPIES
Ever since arriving in Australia--aka Oz--natives have been warning me about "Tall Poppy Syndrome." An apparently defining complex of Australian culture, Tall Poppy Syndrome originated in ancient Rome--as recorded by Livy, by way of Herodotus--before spreading northward to England where it was eventually transported to Australia during Queen Victoria's reign.
As the story goes, Tarquin the Proud, Rome's seventh and final king, is said to have issued the order to put to death the most illustrious citizens of a town under his dominion. The arrogant king issued his command via a demonstrative metaphor, scything the heads off the tallest poppies in his garden. Since the time of Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, this tale has become a fable of submission, envy, and talion dread: Don't stand too tall or be too colorful, don't get ahead of yourself...or you might find yourself without a head!

Freud's Discontents. The relevance and application of Freud's theories extend beyond understanding individual pathology into the realms of collective power and politics. Why, then, has the influence of these theories and ways of thinking drifted out of contemporary psychology? How can understanding Freud's history help revitalize psychoanalysis to support our work in this uncertain political and social climate?
The Original "Nasty Woman." The myth of Medusa is used as a cultural signifier to describe how powerful, thinking women are silenced, ostracized, and aggressed upon in the name of misogyny, fear, and oppression.
Susie Orbach: The Poetry of Therapy. Susie Orbach beautifully shares the idiosyncratic poetry of the therapeutic hour and the therapeutic relationship. She eloquently describes how the experience of bearing and facing our own conflicts in treatment can break old patterns and lead to something transformational.
