THE PARADOX OF SEXUAL FREEDOM:
Women’s Sexuality and Desires

Course Overview: 

American women in early adulthood may seem uniquely poised to successfully navigate the complexities of sexuality and relationships — they have had more opportunities, more positive role models, and more information than previous generations. And yet, young women still struggle to navigate sexual and relational desire and pleasure. This class will provide psychotherapists with an understanding of this new and unique developmental period for women, with a particular focus on Klein’s and Benjamin’s notion of splitting. The class will include information on the role of race, class, sexual orientation, and religion in shaping women’s experiences of sexuality and desire and will provide tools for working with women told they can “have it all,” but who are coming up short when it comes to sex and love.

Course Objectives: 

At the conclusion of this course participants will be able to:

  1. Differentiate between early adulthood and other developmental periods of adulthood for diverse groups of women.
  2. Explain the impact of a culture that tells women they can "have it all" at the same time that it insists that they adhere to traditional codes of femininity on young adult women's mental health, relationship and intimacy skills, and sexual satisfaction.
  3. Describe the defense of splitting and how it manifests particularly in women in early adulthood.
  4. Identify the role of race, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and religion in shaping women’s experiences of sexuality and desire in young adulthood.
Instructor(s): 

Leslie C. Bell, Ph.D., LCSW, is a clinician and sociologist specializing in women’s development and sexuality. She maintains a private practice in Berkeley and supervises at TPI and the Women’s Therapy Center. Dr. Bell is the author of Hard to Get: 20-Something Women and the Paradox of Sexual Freedom and is an esteemed lecturer on women’s development, gender inequality, and sexuality. 

Target Audience & Level: 

This course is for clinicians of all levels with some background in the principles of psychoanalytic approaches.

Cancellation & Refund Policies: 

Enrollees who cancel at least SEVEN DAYS prior to the event date will receive a refund minus a $35 administrative charge. No refunds will be allowed after this time.  Transfer of registrations are not allowed.
