FOUNDATIONS:
An Introduction to Donald Winnicott

Course Overview:

By initially examining the relationship between infant and mother, Winnicott extrapolated and developed many ideas that are now the building blocks for current psychoanalytic theory. In this seminar we will examine Winnicott’s innovative theoretical ideas in which he used the mother/infant dyad as a model to create a metaphor for understanding the importance of the environment and the unconscious in clinical theory. We will read some of his key theoretical and clinical papers and use them as an entryway to thinking about clinical work.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course participant will be able to:

  1. Articulate at least 2 consequences of early environmental failure on development.
  2. Describe the elements of the psychosomatic illness as a way to draw the mind back to the body.
  3. Explain and understand the self as a paradoxical relationship between communicating and the need to preserve a private inviolable core which is understood through the process of holding.
Instructor(s):

Reyna Cowan, Psy.D., LCSW, is a psychoanalyst, a personal and supervising analyst at PINC, and is on faculty at both PINC and SFCP. She teaches widely throughout the Bay Area and has a private practice in Oakland, where she works with adults, couples, adolescents, and children.

Target Audience & Level:

This class is targeted towards clinicians interested in thinking more intensively about foundational psychoanalytic ideas and how they apply to clinical work. The class is appropriate for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students of psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
