FOUNDATIONS:
Advanced Klein (Clinical Klein)
This six-week course is the second in our two-course series, “An Introduction to Melanie Klein.” In this course, we will deepen our understanding of contemporary Kleinian theory and technique by closely studying two clinically oriented papers. During the first three weeks of the course, we will study a paper showing an example of clinical work with a child. In the second half of the course, we will discuss a paper that focuses on clinical work with an adult patient. As we study the clinical material in these two papers, we will consider how the therapist listens to the patient’s material, making sense of the transference, counter-transference, and unconscious phantasies. We will use the clinical material in the two case examples to consider the relationship between theory and technique. At the end of the course, we will consider how we might use the ideas that we have learned in the course to understand our current work with our patients.
(Note: This course is a follow-up to the previous Klein course held in the spring. Previous participants are encouraged to continue their study. However, this course is also open to all interested. Some familiarity with Klein is preferred.)
After completing this six-week course, participants will be able to:
- Define what Melanie Klein means by the infant envying the mother.
- Define what Melanie Klein means by the term 'internal object'.
- Explain why greed is destructive.
- Differentiate Melanie Klein's notion of true repair from manic repair.
- Provide one reason why splitting is important.
- Name one aspect of the mourning process.
- Describe one problem with envy.
- Describe Melanie Klein's notion of the primal scene.
Margo Chapin, MFT, is a faculty member and a supervising and training analyst at SFCP. Ms. Chapin has a private practice in Oakland, and she leads several ongoing study groups for clinicians in the Bay Area.
