Course Overview:

Freud’s Oedipal complex has had the most profound and lasting impact on psychoanalytic thought. His conception of the Oedipal has gone through numerous transformations but has undeniably stood the test of time. This class will revisit Freud’s original theory. Understanding Freud’s Oedipal is important, not only to appreciate his contribution, but to provide a foundation for understanding all later theorists. In this class we will hear from Freud and others in an effort to understand, highlight, and challenge his basic conception. Through close reading of primary sources, clinical examples, and group discussion we will explore how Freud’s theory remains relevant within a contemporary context. By thinking together about these foundational concepts, we will further develop and deepen our own capacity for listening, understanding, and containing our patient’s essential communications.

Course Objectives:
  1. Participants will be able to identify the central tenets of Freud’s classic Oedipal theory.
  2. Participants will be able to identify central qualities of the phallic and genital stages, which are expressed and developed within the Oedipal conflict. They will also be able to begin to identify these primary developmental experiences in their clinical work with patients.
  3. Participants will be able to identify the factors contributing to the Oedipal resolution while also thinking critically about what factors contribute to an Oedipal resolution in a contemporary context.
