This month, the Bay Area is hosting the Super Bowl. Seizing on this goldmine of marketing potential, Verizon is presenting Super Bowl City, described as a “fan village...designed to showcase the best the Bay Area has to offer, with interactive games and activities that highlight the region’s technological progress, culinary excellence and cultural diversity.” The land on which this trophy-village was erected, however, was already occupied, and the village builders have determined that these residents, homeless people, don’t belong in Super Bowl City. The solution? Make them move. Out of sight, out of mind.

SUSANNE CHASSAY MEMORIAL PAPER AWARD
This year will be the first of three in which the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California (PINC) will sponsor the Susanne Chassay Memorial Paper Award.
The award commemorates our beloved friend and colleague Susanne Chassay, a graduate of PINC and winner of the first IPA Tyson Prize (2005) for her paper "Death in the Afternoon."

THE PARADOX OF HOPE
At a recent storytelling event ushering in the new year, audience members were asked about their resolutions: "To give up hope only to regain it," one woman said.
This echoed something I'd heard just weeks before at a clinical meeting I facilitate, when I asked the staff to share something they were doing for self-care. A colleague who unfailingly sees the best in everyone surprised us all by saying she had given up hope and, thus, was no longer so prone to disappointment.

While contemporary psychoanalytic thinking encourages psychotherapists to consider certain taboos, such as sex, death, and money, many clinicians still find themselves alone with their ruminations and reveries about these topics. How explicit and graphic are these thoughts? How does the patient's reaction to death, sex, or money trigger our own?
